School Liaison provide support to airmen and their families during all the stages of transition and deployment to ensure that their children receive the same opportunity for a quality education

The School Liaison Officer is a critical link between military installations, local school administrations, parents, and the community at-large.  Specific responsibilities include: advising the area installation commander on all matters concerning student education and academic resources for school age children; fostering a responsive, cooperative relationship between school representatives and the military community; and maintaining school transition support for military children.  Parents, counselors and school community leaders with questions concerning school-age military connected child education are encouraged to contact our School Liaison Officer.

Education is a primary quality of life concern for military families and transitioning from school to school is always challenging. The Moving Checklist found on this page will help parents and children prepare for their upcoming move. Also you can find critical information about schools and how the military family connects with them on the “Frequently Asked Question” link below.

There are two school systems serving Langley AFB on-base residents.  Children who reside on Langley AFB attend Hampton City Schools, with 36 schools.  For main base there are one elementary (Burbank), one middle (Davis), and one high school (Hampton) serving as primary feeder schools.  Hampton City Schools has historically worked successfully with Langley AFB airmen to make the educational experience for their children a positive one.  Their school administration will make every attempt to place the “military child” in the school that best fits their needs.  The nearby Landings (old Bethel Manor) housing area residents attend York County Schools, with 19 schools.  Bethel Manor residents are serviced by two elementary (Bethel Manor & Tabb), two middle and high schools (Tabb & Grafton), depending on where you live in the housing area.  There are many opportunities to expand educational opportunities by applying to a Magnet school to further challenge the talents of your children—I encourage you to explore your options.

For those families living off-base, there are opportunities for childred to attend schools in nearby cities:  Poquoson, Newport News, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, and nearby counties, Williamsburg/James City County and Isle of Wight County schools. There is also an extensive listing of private schools in the area for you to choose from.

Those that home school, please look at the Virginia home school web page at http://www.heav.org/ to answer your questions in this area.   Additional information and regulations for homeschooling can be found at the following links:

In-Processing

Registering for school must be done as soon as possible upon arriving in the area. The link below will have information concerning Hampton City Schools or York County School District registration requirements.  All elementary school children new to Virginia must obtain a school physical.  Though school do give military a 30-day “grace period”, it will be easier if you have it accomplished by the child’s current pediatrician.  The form for this physical is linked below.   Registration must be completed at the attending school; however, children with special needs must be registered at the district office (please make sure to bring the child's IEP from the previous school). The TDAP immunization is now required for all students entering the 6th grade. http://www.sbo.hampton.k12.va.us/departments/health/health.html

Download Scool Entrance Health Form .

Registration requirements for other school districts may differ, so please check with the school if living outside of the Hampton or York County (links to other districts will be found at)  http://www.militaryk12link.com/.
